Day 2 - Adventures above and underground!
A scenic one-hour drive brings you to Caves Branch National Park, set along a winding river that flows through the Maya Mountains where numerous caves were once inhabited by the ancient Maya. Your first adventure offers a bird’s-eye view of the lush forest canopy. Securely harnessed to cables 70 feet above the forest floor, you’ll ‘zip’ 100 feet (and more!) through the air from tree-top platform to tree-top platform.
Then join your naturalist guide for a 45-minute hike along jungle trails, learning about indigenous plants and roots used by the Maya. Coming to a cave entrance, you’ll be given a flashlight and inner tube. Floating along gentle river currents, follow your guide into a network of caverns filled with beautiful stalagmites and stalactites. Emerging from this beautiful underground world, you’ll continue on to San Ignacio where an air-conditioned balcony room awaits at the first class San Ignacio Resort Hotel. Meals B,L
Day 3 - Explore the Mayan world
A 19th century hand-cranked ferry transports you across the Mopan River for an in-depth guided tour through the ancient Mayan ruins of Xunantunich. Set on a high plateau, you’ll have time to ascend to the top of El Castillo, the largest temple at this site, for sweeping views across the Cayo District into neighboring Guatemala. Next you visit Cahal Pech, identified by archaeologists and scholars as an ancient royal compound. Set on a hilltop, this 6-acre Mayan site includes clusters of temples and palaces arranged around a series of plazas with terraces, carved facades and stairways. Meals B,L
Day 4 - At leisure in San Ignacio
Explore at your own pace or join an available excursion. You can visit the vast ruins of Tikal in Guatemala or explore Caracol, the largest Mayan city in Belize. Meals B
Day 5 - From rainforest to Ambergris Caye
This morning you travel to Peccary Hills National Park, 27,000 acres of rolling hills and rainforest, filled with jungle waterways, ancient trails, and caves once inhabited by the Maya. The Park is home to a healthy population of jaguar, and we invite you to assist in the preservation of their habitat by planting a Mahogany tree here in the rainforest.
Boarding comfortable safari vehicles, you’ll explore the Park en route to Northern Lagoon Beach. Enjoy some leisure time here before returning to Belize City by river boat, a leisurely journey that offers terrific opportunity to spot indigenous wildlife along the river banks, including numerous tropical birds and several types of monkeys. Arrive Belize City and transfer to the airport for your short, 15-minute flight to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. You’ll be met at the airport and escorted to the first class Ramon’s Village Resort, where your comfortable air-conditioned verandah room awaits. Meals B,L
Day 6 - Snorkel in Shark Ray Alley!
Arise to the spectacular beauty of this tropical island where, just offshore, is the world’s second largest Barrier Reef! Today’s guided snorkeling excursion brings you into the clear waters of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, centered around a quebrada – a natural cut in the reef that measures about 25 yards wide and 30 feet deep. Here in this protected habitat, you can find 160 species of fish, 40 species of corals, 3 different marine mammals, and 3 species of sea turtle. You’ll also snorkel in Shark Ray Alley, a unique location where Nurse Sharks and Southern sting rays often congregate. Meals B
