Bordered by the Indian Ocean and built overlooking the gentle Swan River, Perth, San Diego’s sister city and the capital of Western Australia, is a contemporary city in an aquatic wonderland. With a Mediterranean climate and an average of eight hours of sunlight per day (the highest average in urban Australia), Perth is sure to please. Glide the Swan’s glittering waters in a kayak, or surf at some of Australia’s best beaches. Test your yachting skills by sailing to colorful Rottnest Island, home of the cuddly Quokka, and dive down to the isle's coral caves.
Day 4 Perth & Fremantle Tour The tour starts with Kings Park which occupies approximately 400 hectares of Mount Eliza overlooking the city of Perth and the Swan River. The Park has much to offer with sweeping parklands, Botanic Garden, wildflowers (spectacular in the Spring), and native bush land. There are extensive city and river views with a panorama to the Darling Scarp. The magnificently sited State War Memorial is also one of several scenic vantage points. Then, on our way out of the city we stop at one of Perth's best kept secrets, Cottesloe Beach. Its crystal clear waters, regular swell and fun atmosphere make it popular with swimmers, body-boarders and surfers alike. We enjoy morning tea overlooking the Indian Ocean.
From here we travel to the coast and to Fremantle which oozes heritage and cosmopolitan culture. The streets are abuzz with shoppers and al fresco diners. Best known for its docks, marinas, and charming heritage sandstone buildings we head to Victoria Quay to visit the Western Australian Maritime Museum. Designed to depict a boat stranded on a sandy promontory, the museum houses famous sailing vessels along with hands on exhibits bringing sea-faring heritage to life.
Some of the state’s most popular seafood restaurants and cafés are dotted around Fishing Boat Harbour - and here we have a beautiful fish and chip lunch - the perfect place to sample the Indian Ocean’s bounty.
To finish off the day we board a cruise to take you back to Perth. Our return journey follows Perths scenic Indian Ocean coastline via Leighton, Port and Cottesloe Beaches. One final stop at Kings Park allows time to enjoy and photograph the outstanding panorama of Perth and the Swan River before arriving back into the city late afternoon.
Day 5 Swan Valley Experience We leave the city and head North to our first stop, Caversham Wildlife Park. The park has mostly Australian animals is unique in that it has bred its own wombats, Tasmanian devils and koalas, and is the only park in Western Australia to have bred cassowaries.
We head into the The Swan Valley, W.A's oldest winegrowing region, an area also renowned for its world-class fortified wines and offers one of Australia's biggest range of luscious 'stickies'. We will taste some of the best the region has to offer as well as have lunch alfresco in one of the fine establishments attached to one of the wineries.
On our way back to the city we make a stop at the Margaret River Chocolate Company, providing a fascinating insight into the world of chocolate.
